POLL: Drive Bye

Friday, May 01, 2009 - 12:00 AM

A reader writes... Q: As you get older, does your sex drive change? After all, the kind of medical issues you have at 55, you don't have at 30 -- high blood pressure, prostate problems and all. I'm 33 and just wondering.
POLL: Does sex get better with age?

18% (133) I know it does

15% (110) I know it doesn't

66% (475) I hope it does

I don't know about everyone else; but for me, the drive is still there. It's the *stamina* that's slipping.

It's just like watching sports as opposed to playing. The excitement's there, and so's the desire. So is the aching back, the sore knees...I gotta get up early to work...

...f#@k it. Maybe next time.

In Response to TheOriginalJes (#47680):

To quote the infamous Zap Branigan, "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is...spongy and bruised."

The drive is still there, it has seemed to lessen a bit over time. Naturally the "high mileage" features of being older come into play, but there are rewards too.

In a long term relationship you know each other better and better as time goes on and as you get more comfortable in the relationship then you can respond to each other better.

In less long term circumstances, you have a wealth of experience to draw on and far more patience than you had at 25.

I can't say definitively for everyone, but for me at least the quantity may have gone down a bit, but the quality is up.

I notice that it takes longer between orgasms to have another one. But the drive isn't any less, just less orgasm driven.

I'm actually very curious about this too. (I'm a youngin' of 21)

For the people replying, do you think you could post your ages as well, so we get a sense of where in the way of things you are?

"The spirit is willing but the flesh is spongy and bruised." Yeah, that about sums it up. Let's see, when I was 20 and involved, I'd say every day at least once, usually twice. Now at age 40 (and married), uh, maybe once a week. My wife's drive waned considerably over the years, while mine kind of burned out a couple years back.

Then there's the aching knees, the paunch in the way, the "well, I guess so, but I've got a busy day tomorrow" etc.

I imagine it's like this for everyone, or why else would there be Viagra in such high demand.

As you age and other obligations set in, it tends to slip a few spaces on your priority list. As to whether it's "better" or not, like Woody Allen says, every orgasm I've ever had was...great.

Hell, let's face it, we're not responsible for anything; including the things we say, do, or think. And if you sue us because you think we are? Well, we're not responsible for that either.
